Dr. John B. Peters is a fifth generation minister, four of whom were Methodist. His grandfather, James Sydney Peters served Trinity at the turn of the century. John was born in Roanoke, VA, where his father served Fairview United Methodist Church. John is married to the former Julie Keyser of Charlottesville who is a Registered Nurse. They have two sons, Mark and Matthew.

John received his BA degree from Randolph Macon College, Master of Divinity from the Divinity School at Duke University and did a year of graduate study at the University of Edinburgh in Edinburgh , Scotland. He was awarded a Doctor of Divinity degree from Randolph Macon College in 1992. He was ordained a deacon in 1971 and ordained elder in 1974.
